The idea

What is a standards test?

A standards test takes the preferences you already have — the age range you swipe within, the background you imagine, the lifestyle you expect — and asks one blunt question: out of 100 people, how many actually check every box?

We built this calculator because everyone walks around with a mental list of dating criteria, but almost nobody knows what that list does to their odds. The math is invisible. "Fit, educated, no kids, never married" sounds completely reasonable when you say it out loud — and quietly eliminates 97% of the country.

So instead of arguing about whether your standards are "too high," you get a number: a percentage of the US adult population, plus the absolute count of real people who match every criterion. It's the same kind of calculation insurers and demographers run every day — just pointed at your dating life.

This is not a judgment machine. High standards aren't wrong, and relaxed ones aren't right. The standards test simply shows you the price tag on each criterion, so you can decide what's worth paying.

How it works

How the standards test math works

Every criterion you set is a filter that removes everyone who doesn't pass it. When you stack criteria, the filters multiply — they don't average.

Take three filters that each keep only 30% of the pool: 30% × 30% × 30% = 2.7%. Three perfectly reasonable-sounding preferences, and you've kept fewer than 3 people in 100. That's why the surprise is so consistent: each filter alone feels modest, but together they compound into something brutal.

Here's a real example from the data. Among White women aged 25–34: about 36% have a healthy BMI, roughly 42% have never been married, and about 41% hold a bachelor's degree. Apply just those three, and 36% × 42% × 41% leaves about 6.3% — before age range, politics, or anything else.

One more thing most calculators get wrong: these traits aren't independent. Political leaning, body weight, and education all vary significantly by race and age. This model applies each probability conditionally — weighted by the actual composition of the pool you selected — which is why the numbers hold up better than naive back-of-the-envelope math. The model

The 9 factors, ranked by impact

Not all filters are equal. Ranked by how hard they typically cut the pool, here's what each factor in the standards test actually does:

  1. Prior sexual partners (requiring zero). The single most powerful filter in the model. By their mid-20s to mid-30s, the share of women reporting zero lifetime partners falls to single digits — this one criterion can remove more of the pool than every other filter combined.
  2. Body weight (healthy BMI). Depending on the racial composition of your pool, requiring a BMI under 25 keeps somewhere between 1 in 5 and 1 in 2. The softer "not obese" option is far gentler.
  3. Never married. Age-dependent and steep: mild in the early 20s, brutal after 35 — by their late 30s, fewer than 1 in 5 White and Asian women have never been married.
  4. No children. The same age cliff as marital history. A "no kids" requirement is cheap at 25 and expensive at 40.
  5. Education (bachelor's degree). Roughly 2 in 5 White women and 3 in 5 Asian women hold a bachelor's degree; the rate dips to about 1 in 5 for Hispanic women.
  6. Political leaning (conservative). Roughly 43% of White women identify as conservative, but under 10% of Black women do — your pool's racial composition dramatically changes what this filter costs.
  7. Raised by both parents. Between roughly 1 in 4 and 3 in 4 of the pool, depending on race.
  8. Age range. A wide band is cheap; a narrow one is expensive. Every year you trim from the range removes its share of the pool.
  9. Race / ethnicity. Excluding a group shrinks the pool by its population share — and quietly re-weights every other filter, since all probabilities in the model are race-conditional.

Data highlights

What the data actually says

People assume a standards test exists to deliver harsh truths. In practice, the demographic data cuts in both directions:

  • There are more matches than you think — in absolute terms. US women aged 18–44 number about 55 million. Even a brutal 1% result still means more than half a million real people.
  • Nearly half of women in their late 20s and early 30s have never been married. The "everyone decent is already taken" feeling is not what the Census shows.
  • About 4% of women aged 25–34 report zero lifetime sexual partners.One in 25 — rarer than most people guess, but nowhere near zero.
  • Just over half of Asian women have a healthy BMI, versus about 1 in 5 Black women. Any body-weight filter changes the pool dramatically depending on its racial composition — which is exactly why the calculator weights by race.

Reading your result

What your standards test result means

A percentage without context is just anxiety. The calculator sorts every result into four tiers:

Two rules of thumb when you read your standards test result:

The absolute count matters more than the percentage. 0.5% of US women aged 18–44 is still roughly 275,000 people — a mid-sized city's worth. A small percentage is not a verdict on your love life.

Read the breakdown, not just the total. The calculator shows what each filter costs you. That's the actionable part: if one criterion is doing 90% of the damage, that's the one to think about — not "my standards" as a vague whole.
